Fully Funded Scholarships for Nigerian Students 2026–2027 (Apply Now Before Deadlines Close)

Career Tips 📅 May 17, 2026 ✍️ Sasa Apply Team

Nigerian students are among the most driven and talented on the African continent, yet thousands of genuine scholarship seats go unfilled every year. The reason is rarely a lack of qualification. It almost always comes down to three things: not knowing the opportunity existed, missing the application window, or wasting time on fake scholarships that were never real.

This guide covers only verified, government-backed, and internationally recognised programmes. Every entry has been confirmed against its official source. Where a deadline has already passed for the current cycle, we say so clearly and tell you exactly how to prepare for the next one.

Read this fully. Then share it with every Nigerian student you know.

What Most Scholarship Guides Will Never Tell You

The Nigerian applicants who actually win these scholarships — the ones who receive the offer letters — do not begin preparing when the application portal opens. They start months earlier.

Strong personal essays cannot be written in a weekend. Reference letters require proper advance notice. Some programmes require a university admission letter before your scholarship application can even be completed. If you wait for the portal to go live, you are already behind applicants who have been quietly preparing for weeks.

Start today. Draft your essays. Contact your referees. Research your target universities. When the window opens, you will be ready.

1. Queen Elizabeth Commonwealth Scholarships (QECS) 2026

Where you study: Any eligible low or middle-income Commonwealth country Level: Master’s degree — two years, full time Funding: Fully funded Current status: Cycle 2 opened 9 April 2026 — closes 3 June 2026 at 15:00 UTC

Because Nigeria is a Commonwealth member, every qualifying Nigerian graduate can apply. This programme is not purely about grades. It specifically selects candidates who have a clear, credible plan to use their education to address real problems back home in Nigeria.

What it covers:

  • Full tuition paid to your host university
  • Monthly living allowance throughout your two-year programme
  • Return economy flights from Nigeria
  • One-time arrival allowance
  • Research Support Grant available on request

Minimum requirement: Bachelor’s degree with at least a 2:1 or equivalent

Key rule: You cannot study in Nigeria and cannot choose the UK, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand — those are high-income Commonwealth countries excluded from this programme.

2. Chevening Scholarship 2027 — United Kingdom

Where you study: Any UK university of your choice Level: One-year Master’s degree, full time Funding: Fully funded Next cycle opens: August 2026 | Deadline: October 2026 (exact date to be confirmed)

Chevening is the UK Government’s flagship international scholarship and one of the most recognised awards in the world for emerging leaders. It has supported outstanding individuals from over 160 countries and has a strong and active Nigerian alumni community.

What sets Chevening apart is its focus on leadership trajectory and professional potential — not academic scores alone.

What it covers:

  • Full tuition fees at your chosen UK university
  • Monthly living expenses for the full year
  • Return flights between Nigeria and the UK
  • A one-time arrival grant
  • A departure allowance at the end of your studies

  • A travel grant for Chevening events in the UK
  • Access to a global alumni and professional development network

Who qualifies:

  • Nigerian citizen
  • At least two years of work experience (2,800 hours — paid or unpaid, full-time or part-time)
  • Undergraduate degree equivalent to a UK 2:1 or above
  • Must commit to returning to Nigeria for a minimum of two years after graduating
  • Must not be living or studying in the UK at time of application

The application has four written essays — on leadership, networking, career plans, and motivation for studying in the UK. Each is 500 words maximum. These essays are the single most important part of your application.

Note: The 2026–2027 cycle is now closed. Use the time before August 2026 to draft your essays, secure your referees, and research your three chosen UK universities.

3. DAAD Scholarships — Germany 2026/2027

Where you study: Germany Level: Master’s and PhD Funding: Fully funded

DAAD — the Deutscher Akademische Austauschdienst — is Germany’s internationally respected scholarship organisation, funded by the German federal government. It is not one scholarship. It is an umbrella body running dozens of separate funding programmes, each with its own requirements, disciplines, and deadlines.

One thing many Nigerians do not realise: most German universities charge very low or zero tuition fees for international students. DAAD funding primarily covers your living costs, which eliminates the largest financial barrier to studying in Germany.

Typical DAAD funding covers:

  • Monthly living allowance
  • Health insurance
  • Study and research allowances
  • International travel costs

Most relevant programmes for Nigerians:

DAAD In-Country/In-Region Programme for Sub-Saharan Africa — Supports Master’s programmes in development-related fields. One participating Nigerian institution is the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. The April 2026 deadline has passed — monitor the site for the next cycle.

DAAD EPOS Scholarships — For working professionals from developing countries pursuing development-related postgraduate study. Deadlines vary by programme.

DAAD Helmut-Schmidt Programme — For professionals with at least two years of experience seeking a Master’s in public policy or governance.

4. Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s — Europe 2026/2027

Where you study: Two or more European countries within one programme Level: One to two year Master’s degree Funding: Fully funded

Erasmus Mundus is funded by the European Union and lets you earn a single integrated Master’s degree while studying at two or more European universities in different countries. It is one of the most generously funded scholarships open to Nigerians — and one of the least applied for simply because many people are unaware it exists.

Each Erasmus Mundus programme is independently run by a consortium of universities. They span engineering, public health, environmental science, economics, social sciences, and more. You apply directly to a specific programme in your field — not to a central portal.

What it covers:

  • Full tuition across all partner universities
  • Monthly living allowance for the full duration
  • Travel and relocation costs
  • International health insurance

Who qualifies: Graduates from any country outside the EU. Nigeria qualifies fully. Additional requirements vary by programme.

How to find your programme: Search the official catalogue and filter by your subject area. New 2027 intakes begin opening for applications from late 2026 onwards.

How to Build an Application That Gets Selected

Meeting the minimum eligibility requirement gets your file opened. It does not win you a scholarship. Here is what actually separates selected candidates from the rest.

Be specific, not general Selection panels read thousands of essays that say “I want to contribute to Nigeria’s development.” That phrase, without concrete detail, communicates almost nothing. Name the exact problem you are addressing. Explain how your chosen programme positions you to work on it. Describe what your first steps will look like when you return to Nigeria. Specific thinking signals genuine preparation. Vague language signals a template.

Gather your documents now Transcripts, degree certificates, a valid passport, and reference letters all take time. Give your referees a minimum of four weeks notice — and more if you want a letter that genuinely advocates for you rather than a generic paragraph. Start this process immediately.

Apply to multiple programmes Do not stake everything on one application. Unsuccessful applications teach you what to strengthen. Each essay you write makes the next one sharper. Apply as broadly as your eligibility allows.

Write your own essays There is a growing market in Nigeria for agencies that write scholarship essays on behalf of applicants. This is a costly mistake. Selection panels are trained to recognise inauthentic writing. More importantly, the scholarship is designed to fund your thinking, your values, and your vision — not a polished document that someone else produced. Structural help and feedback are fine. The ideas and the voice must be genuinely yours.

Reapply if you are not selected Many current scholarship holders applied more than once before winning. A rejection in one cycle is information, not a verdict. Use it, improve your application, and submit again.
